Casua, in cooperation with the company AFRY, was commissioned, on the basis of a selection process, to prepare an urban and traffic study of the pre-station area of the Main Railway Station of the city of Ostrava in the location of Přívoz. For the studio, it was one of the first works on an urban study that took place in the form of a dialogue between a large number of actors in the territory. The unequivocal goal of the process was to find a suitable urban planning concept for the area under consideration in connection with urban transport and the surrounding urban structure. The task was to create an adequate public space in front of the station and a transfer terminal for urban and suburban public transport as a multimodal transport hub of the third largest city in the republic.
The project will thus be involved in a major reconstruction of the entire Ostrava transport hub. The basis of the work was a relatively detailed traffic and urban planning analysis, which evaluated the state and possibilities of the entire area and especially their connections to the nearest area. The area, for example, follows on from one of the most complex urban realizations of the architect Camillo Sitté from the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries, and the connection of the two locations with a new stopping structure of the potential redevelopment area of the city was very inspiring.
In the future, the entire area should thus be connected into one urban unit with a logical outcome in the transport terminal. With the introduction of the high-speed line to the Ostrava main station terminal, the number of people who will pass through the area every day will more than double. The main railway station was built in the 1960s according to the project of the architect Lacina, and even though it is not listed, the exhibition building and the very specific shelter in front of the building are characteristic representatives of the architecture of the so-called Brussels style. The study maintains the basicurban and architectural characteristics of the territory and brings to the space a new quality of public space and the comfort of transfer connections.
